Going Deep: Cautious Steps toward Seabed Mining
نویسنده
چکیده
The ocean floor is home to a wealth of species, some of which—such as this bamboo coral (Isidella tentaculum)—have only recently been discovered. Proponents of seabed mining claim it causes less ecological damage than terrestrial extraction. But some researchers are concerned that seabed mining could overwhelm deep-sea ecosystems, adding to concerns about the health of the oceans.

An Overview of Seabed Mining Including the Current State of Development, Environmental Impacts, and Knowledge Gaps
Rising demand for minerals and metals, including for use in the technology sector, has led to a resurgence of interest in exploration of mineral resources located on the seabed. Such resources, whether seafloor massive (polymetallic) sulfides around hydrothermal vents, cobalt-rich crusts (CRCs) on the flanks of seamounts or fields of manganese (polymetallic) nodules on the abyssal plains, canno...

Effect of Riser-Seabed Interaction on the Dynamic Behavior of Risers
In recent years, the production of oil and gas has been developed in deep water depths which exceed 500m. Deep water developments are being followed strongly in different parts of the world (Caspian Sea, Gulf of Mexico, etc.). The movement of floater causes severe stress at the touchdown point (TDP) in steel catenary risers (SCR). The main objective of this study was to simulate the exact behav...

متن کاملTechnological and Profitable Analysis of Airlifting in Deep Sea Mining Systems
Airlifting technology utilized in deep-sea mining (DSM) industry was proposed in the 70s of last century, which was triggered by the discovery of vast amounts of mineral resources on the seabed. The objective of this paper is to assess the technological feasibility and profitability analyses in terms of solid production rate, energy consumption per tonnage of mineral, and profitability per tonn...
